Wow! What a summer! Atlanta has set a record for the
most days of 90 degrees or more…91 days! I have to tell you, I have grown weary
of this heat! There was a question on the internet asking, “Have you enjoyed
this extended summer?” I can say emphatically, “NO”! Now when I was eighteen, I would have probably
answered differently. It would have
meant more time at the pool, the lake, and the beach, more tanning days! Having
had two skin cancer spots removed, I, now, scrupulously avoid being in the sun
any longer than necessary. My ideal temperature range would be from mid-sixties
in the day to mid-forties at night sort of “lukecool”, more on the cool side,
less on the warm side but definitely not hot or even “lukewarm.”
You know the Bible talks about being lukewarm and not
very kindly at that. In Revelation 3:15, 16, God talks about being lukewarm. He
says to the church at Laodicea, “I know
your deeds, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish you were one or the
other. So because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold- I am about to spit you
out of my mouth.” (Literally,” I am about to vomit.”) Wow! Being lukewarm
in their Christian life made God sick to His stomach. Those are pretty strong
words. The Laodiceans understood the analogy he was making because the water
they piped in from Heirapolis ended up there lukewarm.
Socrates said, “A life unexamined is not worth living.
I ask myself, “Have I become lukewarm in
my love for Christ?” In Revelation 2:4, it says,” Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.” May we, if we find this to be true in our
lives, pray as King David did in Psalm 51, “Create
in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast
me from Thy presence or take the Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of my salvation (i.e.
My first love) and grant me a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors
Thy ways and sinners will turn back to you.”
