CHRIST - THE REESE SOURCE
THE NEWSLETTER OF NET WORK MINISTRIES, INC.
NOVEMBER 2009 EDITION
It happened in the blink of an eye. One moment I am driving down Cobb Parkway (a major thoroughfare that divides Cobb County) on my way to a lunch appointment. The next moment I am seeing a tractor-trailer, coming from the opposite direction, turning into the path of my small Honda Civic. I only have time to hit the brakes and swerve just slightly. At approximately thirty miles an hour, I collided with the truck, hitting it squarely in the diesel fuel tank, which was apparently full. The tank ruptured upon impact, sending a wave of diesel fuel over my car. Fortunately, diesel fuel has a high ignition point; otherwise I would have been incinerated immediately. Amazingly, my air bag did not deploy but my seat belt did hold me back from hitting the steering wheel. My car suffered a great deal of front-end damage, six thousand dollars worth! The truck driver was cited for failing to yield the intersection so their insurance company has settled the property damage and diminished value part of my claim as of this writing. Later on that afternoon, it struck me that if I had possibly had been a half second later, my Honda Civic would have gone under the trailer portion of the truck with much more dire consequences.
The fact of the matter is this: Life can change in a moment’s time. The doctor comes in and gives you the news that it is cancer. The phone rings and the police tell you that there’s been an accident, your boss of twenty-five years calls you in on Friday and says that you must clean out your desk and be escorted out of the building. The guy you have been dating for the past year suddenly drops to one knee and proffers a diamond ring. You and your wife walk in the door to your home carrying your first baby with a completely new set of responsibilities.
We must realize also that we are not guaranteed tomorrow or even the next moment. It is by God’s grace that we draw our next breath. We take so much for granted in our lives. We have just finished the Thanksgiving holidays. We are back at work now, with our “noses to the grindstone”. Perhaps, for just a moment around the Thanksgiving table, we spoke our obligatory words of thanks to God, but do we maintain an attitude of thanksgiving every day, as we should? During my days in Young Life, we used to sing a song whose lyrics went like this:
“Thank Him in the morning when we see the sun a risin’, thank Him in the evening’ ‘cause He took us through the day, and in the in-between time, when you feel the pressure comin’, remember that He loves you and He promises to stay”
Understand also, that Christ’s offer of eternal life is not open-ended. Whether your life ends today or sixty years from now, it will end, make no mistake about it. The odds are 100% of us will die. When you stand before God and He asks you “Why should I let you into my heaven?” what will be your response? “Well, I lived a good life. I feel I was a good person” Wrong answer. Right answer: “I responded to God’s Holy Spirit’s prompting and asked Christ to forgive my sins and take control of my life”. The question is, “Why wait?” Why take the chance?”
No decision is a decision.
Live your life with an attitude of gratitude each day. God is crazy about you and wants to have a relationship with you. The best way to thank God for all the blessings of this life that he has given us is to enter into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ without delay. Life is fragile, handle with His care.
MINISTRY NEWS:
The two groups are going very well. I am so blessed to be involved with these great men.
We had a couple’s luncheon in which one of the members of our Friday Morning Men’s Group, Johnny Gaskins and his wife Brenda, shared their experience of dealing with A.L.S., also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. They told how their faith in Christ has sustained them during this time.
Having been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, I have found Facebook to be a great ministry tool. I reconnected with one of my football players at Marietta High School whom I had not seen in 20 years. We were able to have lunch together and agreed to meet on a regular basis. I continue to meet on a weekly basis with another young friend from my coaching days at Marietta.
We are nearing the end of the year. Won’t you help us make it over the top and erase the deficit? Remember, the gift of appreciated stock is a cost efficient way of giving. Contact us a 678-986-4814 for details.
Thank you all for your support this year. It has been a huge source of blessing and encouragement.
