A few months ago, I got a new cell phone. I got it because I had had four replacement phones for a previous model that kept going bad. The company was good about replacing them time after time since I had taken out their insurance plan, but after five I said, “Enough!” I got them to agree to an upgrade for all my trouble. To my delight, they upgraded me to one of the new “touch screen” phones, normally a very expensive option. Little did I know at the time that you have to have the touch of a neurosurgeon to operate these devices! Scrolling through your contact list to make a phone call is a little like operating a slot machine in Las Vegas, you can only hope that your efforts to scroll through the list will stop a the right person.
My calendar application also has a reminder feature that tells you, verbally, that there is an upcoming appointment. To date, it has never pronounced anything I have entered into my calendar correctly, nor is it intelligible enough to understand.
Sprint Navigation is another of the features on my phone. It is like having one of those GPS systems in your car that tell you how to get there and where to turn. It also demeans you if you miss the turn. “You blockhead, now you have done it! Why didn’t you turn when I told you to turn?” Now, turn the car around and go back. You can show it who is in control. However, if you ”man-up” and keep going. It will finally acquiesce and say “O.K. You win. I am reluctantly recalibrating your route, but you will probably be sorry!” I do not understand the technology of how this device can tell me how to get to my destination. Nor do I understand how it knows when I have gotten off course. How does it know the necessary corrections to get you back on track? But then again, I do not understand how a plane flies or a television works!
How do we know which direction to take in life? Do we even know our destination? How do we know when we have gotten off course? How do we make the necessary corrections to get back on track in life? Many of us just assume that we know in which direction we want our lives to go. We have our plan. We have mapped out our route. Some of us even seem to think that we have “arrived”. What is the true, final destination of our lives? Who will tell us if we have gotten off course? How will we know, short of some disaster that befalls us? Who will help us as we struggle to make the necessary course corrections?
I cannot speak for anyone but myself regarding the questions listed above. There was a time in my life when I thought I had “arrived.” I was “living large” as they say. I came to ask myself the question that the song that Peggy Lee sang years ago asks,” Is That All There Is? I knew down deep that there was more to life than possessions, power, and position. I thought I was sure of my final destination ….Heaven. Why was I going to Heaven? I was going because I was a good person. .. Beep. Wrong answer! Check out Ephesians 2:8, 9. Your final destination is determined by one thing and one thing only (see John 14:6.) As to who will tell you if you have gotten off course, first of all it is the Holy Spirit (see John14:23-26). Another way is by our brothers and sisters in the faith (see Proverbs 27:5, 6, and 17.). You say, “Well you are quoting from the Bible only”. Here is my answer from a Christian perspective. (see 2nd Timothy 2:16,17.)
Folks, I can only answer from what I, as a Christian, know to be true for me. You must decide for yourself what is true for you.

MINISTRY NEWS:
Good news! We remain only one month behind in salary payment. No further slippage. Thank you for making it possible for me to walk alongside men to provide them with counseling and encouragement.
The weekly groups are going very well:
The Friday Morning Group has been studying C.S. Lewis’ “Mere Christianity”. The discussion has been lively to say the least. Attendance has been quite good.
The Tuesday Night Group is a real blessing as these men seek to become better fathers, husbands, and businessmen. We have been using “Man In The Mirror” as our text.
I meet with men individually for counseling and encouragement. Some are dealing with employment issues. Others are dealing with marriage and family issues; while still others are dealing with issues related to the economy. The economic situation has hit everyone I speak with in one way or another. Loss of jobs, bankruptcy, loss of income, and loss of homes….these are the issues men are facing now.
May God bless each of you and your families. I am grateful for your friendship and support.
