August 2009 Edition

My computer has a virus that has caused me to be unable to download information. I have had a computer expert working on it for almost two weeks.
She has suggested that we may have to re-format the hard drive. That basically means starting with a clean slate on my computer and re-loading all programs that are virus free. Wasn’t technology supposed to be laborsaving? Didn’t the forecasters in the 50’s and 60’s say that improved technology would mean we would only have to work twenty hours a week. We would have increased leisure time. Know many people that have increased leisure time? I don’t. Even my retired friends are busy keeping up with their technology devices.

There is another virus going around now. It is called H1N1 or the swine flu virus.
There are estimates by some sources that say it could kill ninety thousand Americans this year. Fifty percent of the population would be infected with this virus. In 1918, there was an influenza virus that killed some fifty million people worldwide, a half million in the U.S. alone.

There is yet another type of virus. This one infects one hundred percent of the population. Left untreated, it leads to certain death. It has been around since the dawn of man. It is genetically inherited. Some symptoms are more obvious than others. Sometimes, it manifests itself in violent reactions. Other times, it is oh so subtle. We work hard to eliminate the symptoms without treating the root cause.
Most of us are in denial that we have it and leave it untreated. We compare the effects that it has on us with others, which leads us to believe that we are o.k., relatively speaking. We become complacent, not realizing how serious this virus really is and how it can affect those around us. Because its name has been misunderstood and misused and trivialized, the condition has been ignored. We have this “I’m O.K., and You’re Not” feeling about ourselves and others. We tend to confuse the symptoms with the disease.
`
What is this virus? It is the sIn virus. We inherited it from the first parents. You will notice by its middle designator (I) that this condition comes from our believing that we are the masters of our own destiny, that we control our fate. We believe that we know better how to run our lives than the Creator who made us.

What is the cure? Contrary to popular opinion, there is nothing we can do on our own. We cannot cure ourselves by doing better or doing more. We need help.
That’s where The Great Physician comes in. He has the cure. It is blood. It is not our blood that we transfuse or some animal’s blood obtained in a lab somewhere. It is the shed blood of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, which was willingly shed on the Cross for our, yours and my “virus.” Will you accept the treatment? It costs you nothing
except surrendering control of your life to Him who made you and loves you. What about it? Let’s talk.

MINISTRY NEWS:

Our Friday Morning Group has had an increase in participation. This month our First Friday Meeting featured our own, Van Pearlberg, who is the Deputy Assistant District Attorney for Cobb County and Fourth Ward Councilman for the City of Marietta. He regaled us with tales of growing up in Brooklyn.

The Tuesday Night Lights Group has been a great addition to the ministry.

I continue to meet weekly at lunch with a gentleman who has a desire to make some changes in his life.

I continue to minister to men one-on-one in such areas as marriage and family issues, employment issues, and legal issues. I have a network of Christian professionals to whom I can refer in crisis situations.

Thank you for making all this possible!

MINISTRY NEEDS:

We have one month left of reserves for expenses. Salary was only one-third of normal this month.

Now, when my grandchildren come over and they start fussing about something, I tell them this house is a “No Whining Zone!” I hope this item of need does not come off sounding like whining. I am just stating a ministry need. For over 30 years, I have trusted God to provide for the needs of the ministries I have been a part of. He has proven faithful for all these years. Why would I doubt Him now?
